The time has come…sigh

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 10:39 am

Well I have decided the time has come for me to think about getting back to work.  I have REALLY enjoyed my summer off but it needs to end at some point and so I will be getting started on the job search in the near future.  I will be sad to leave my life of leisure but as the lottery refuses to be mine making a living is a necessity.  I could wait longer but by starting now I can take my time and find something that is right for me.  Although the idea of the search brings with it some feelings of stress, I am excited about finding a new challenge and meeting new people.

The hardest part may actually be leaving Regal.  She is so used to spending her days with me that I fear she will be lonely.  I know I will miss her.  It might actually be harder on me than her.  Good grief – what has happened to me?  My wee dog has definitely penetrated my hard candy shell.

Sooooo…what do I do next?

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 8:45 am

When I left my job I planned to take two months off with no thoughts of employment.  At the end of the 2 months the plan was to start thinking about my next job.  Well, the 2 months are up at the end of this week and now I need to decide whether I start the job hunt or enjoy some more time relaxing.  I honestly can’t believe that 2 months have passed already.  It went way too fast!

When I started my summer of leisure, I was expecting that I would be climbing the walls by the end but surprisingly I am not.  I am still quite content to be doing absolutely nothing.  Unfortunately however, I will have to return to work at some point and the time is approaching to think about getting back into the land of employment.  I am not exactly excited or looking forward to the job hunt however.  I am actually quite hesitant about the whole thing.  I am not sure if my hesitation is due to fear of not finding a job or due to my enjoyment of the life of leisure.   Or maybe it is a combination of both.

The times, they are a-changing

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 8:25 pm

I have worked for the same company for 9.5 years.  I’ve had a number of different roles over the years but always in the same company.  I have survived mergers, lay-offs, restructuring, management changes and a whole lot of stress.  I have contemplated leaving a number of times but I always get offered a new challenge and change my mind.  Well this time it is official – I am leaving.  On May 31st I will be a free agent.  We have been undergoing major changes and I just decided that this was a good time for me to move on.  It will be sad to leave some people behind and it will be weird not to work there anymore, but I am looking forward to new challenges and new experiences. This feels like the right decision for me and it feels good to have it all sorted out.

Now the big decision…take the summer off or find work right away…hmmm…Summer of Gwen perhaps?  Well maybe not the summer of Gwen, maybe just The Few Weeks of Gwen.

Another year gone already

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 12:04 pm

Yesterday I “celebrated” my 9 year work anniversary.  (That might explain the pain in my ears eh?) I can’t believe I have worked for the same company for 9 years.  I was such a kid when I started.  Fresh out of university – no idea what I wanted to do – just looking for something to keep me busy while I figured it out.

I can’t believe another whole year has passed.  Where does the time go??

Howdy strangers

Here I am.  Here I am.  Don’t give up on me…here I am.  Here I am trying to make up for another lapse in posts.  Let’s see, what was I up to in my last post….oh yeah I was looking forward to the weekend.  And it was worth looking forward to – I quite enjoyed it.

On Saturday I did nothing.  I was supposed to clean and do some grocery shopping but the option of napping and reading seemed far more interesting to me and so that is what I did.  I read, I napped and I had a day that was long over due.  It felt great to just rest!

On Sunday I got up and tackled the cleaning I was supposed to do on Saturday.  In 4 hours I was able to clean my kitchen, my bathroom, do some laundry, vacuum, mop the floors, dust and bake a torte.  Not bad for a Sunday morning.  After my domestic duties I drove to Mississauga to have dinner and to deliver the torte.  A very productive day but I was beat by bedtime.

Monday marked the beginning of another busy work week.  There seems to be a shadow of bad luck hanging over my team lately as we were once again plagued by a number of support issues.  After work I headed to the mall to do a little shopping and then headed home.

After surviving the day at the office on Tuesday I was able to get in some night driving practice.  I drove to Oakville and back.  Not only was it a longer practice session than I have been doing lately but it was also at night.  I don’t drive at night much so it was good experience for me.

And that brings us to today.  Today was another hectic day at the office.  My word of the day today was “stupidity” so that should give you an indication of how things are going.  But after a meal of salmon and steamed asparagus and an evening weight training session I have to say that I am feeling much better.

And that is pretty much what has been going on for the past few days.  Not that exciting I know but hey, that’s how life is sometimes.  Okay, okay, so maybe that is not all that has been going on.  Perhaps there are some other details of my daily routine that I haven’t shared.  Some of you may be wondering why the dedication I previously had to my daily posts is lacking lately.  Well part of the reason is that I don’t seem to be spending much time on my computer in the evenings anymore.  And when I am not at my computer I tend to forget about my blog.

Soooooo, why am I not at my computer you ask?  Weeeeeell, that would be because I am spending a large chunk of my free time with a boy.   I absolutely enjoy spending time with him but I have not quite adjusted to the new addition in my routine and I guess my blog is feeling the neglect.  I will try to keep up a semi-regular schedule however because I do miss the daily writing sessions.  My blog gives me a creative outlet that I don’t find in many places.  So don’t despair, I may be a little more sporadic with my entries these days but I have not completely disappeared.

Bye bye dolphin, hello To Do list

Filed under: Health Highlights,Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 8:53 pm

It is a good thing I took full advantage of my light schedule for the past couple of weeks because the good times are certainly over.  Word must have gotten out that I was coasting along because I got a slew of work thrown at me all at the same time.  Add to that a day filled with production support issues and you have one heck of a start to what will prove to be a very busy week.

In addition to my work load increasing, I am also targeting this week to get back to working out 6 days a week.  So much for phasing things in slowly.  Oh well, I do like a challenge.

5:00 already?

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 9:14 pm

It is quite amazing how quickly 5:00 comes when you spend the bulk of your day spinning dolphins and playing Boggle.  I did do some work and I did offer some useful input to a couple of people on the team but I will admit that my day was certainly not the most productive day I’ve ever had.  I could have found some more productive things to spend my day on but I am just trying to take advantage of the down-time I am experiencing these days because I am sure it won’t last.

Beer, buddies, blast!

Filed under: Social Subjects,Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 11:45 am

Intended for August 11

Yesterday was a great day of social activities.  In the afternoon our department headed over to the Docks for our quarterly off-site.  Following the standard presentation we enjoyed some drinks and some food.  After the work event, a group of us headed over to the Beer Festival.  We had a blast!!  I probably could have done without the last 2 or 3 samples of beer (I was in no shape to be writing this post last night) but it was a great time anyways.  Pictures will be posted soon.

Thanks to Mathew for organizing the troops.  Can’t wait until next year!!

Farewell Mark!

Filed under: Social Subjects,Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 9:28 pm

Tonight a bunch of us went out to celebrate Mark’s departure from our little work world.  His last day (after 14 years) is tomorrow and so we all raised a glass to wish him well.  It will be strange not to see him around the office but I am sure that our paths will cross again.  And we will always have our blogs to keep us connected.

Good luck on your future adventures Mark!  Stay in touch!
