Renewed dedication…or at least that’s the plan

Filed under: Health Highlights — by gresmer @ 10:07 am

I have joined a gym.  I’ve actually never had a gym membership before because I was using the gym in my building but I have moved (more on that development later) and so I was in need of a new place to work-out.  (And believe me – I need to get back into working out!!  Last week I got on the scale for the first time in months and it wasn’t pretty!)  So as of this morning I am a member at 99 Sudbury – a new gym in King West Village that is undergoing serious renovations but should be quite the place when finished.  This morning Jason and I headed over just after 6AM and put in a 40 minute cardio session.  Not a bad start seeing as I haven’t been on a treadmill in a loooooooong time.  We were the only ones there as well so it was like having our own personal gym.

I’m excited to be getting back into the gym actually.  I have been feeling pretty tired and lethargic lately and I think it is due to bad food choices and a lack of exercise.  Hopefully this will help.  I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Instead of buying each other presents, Linda and I decided to buy ourselves a day at the spa together.  What a brilliant idea (if I do say so myself)!  Yesterday afternoon we met at the Pantages Spa at Victoria and Dundas and enjoyed a hot stone massage (fantastic!), a facial (fantastic!) a pedicure (fantastic!) and a manicure (not fantastic but after the rest of it I was in no shape to be complaining).

From 2 until 6 we were pampered and I left there feeling so utterly relaxed.  The last few weeks have been mega stressful for me and so this was the best present ever!!!!

For some reason, Linda has been saying that I am very tied to my traditions and rituals (not sure why – that’s not me at all – hmm now where did I put that eggnog – I can’t bake without it).  Well I think I may have just created a new Christmas ritual.  A little pampering for myself certainly makes me feel more festive.

Workout advice

Filed under: Health Highlights — by gresmer @ 10:24 pm

Tonight I learned a little something that I thought I would share with you.  If you find yourself on the treadmill with a shoe that needs to be adjusted, I STRONGLY suggest you pause the treadmill before attempting to adjust your shoe.  Being the spaz that I am, I tried to balance myself on the side of the treadmill and ended up slamming my left leg down onto the track.  As if the impact of that wasn’t enough, my leg was then dragged to the end where Tready tried to suck it under as the track turned around the end of the treadmill.  Now this might sound like fun but let me assure you – it HURTS!!  And all this happened in the first 5 minutes of my workout.  I really wanted to just stop because my leg really hurt but I didn’t and I successfully finished a 50 minute workout.  I’ll think twice about my shoe adjustments from now on.

Gwen and Tready – together again

Filed under: Health Highlights — by gresmer @ 5:55 pm

Last night after walking home I headed to the gym for a 45 minute visit with Tready (aka: the treadmill in my building).  It has been a long time since Tready has seen me but it went pretty well.  I forgot how great it feels to get in a good workout.  I am planning to rekindle our committed relationship in the weeks to come.

Internal reflection of external conditions perhaps?

Man I am tired this week!  I am not sure if I am still fighting off some germs or if I am just affected by the shit weather we have had all week but whatever it is, it is kicking my ass!  I just can’t seem to find any energy.  I am getting a lot of quality sleep at night but I just feel so tired all the time.  Needless to say I am looking forward to a very restful weekend.

Oh and I am about to start my latest knitting project.  My mom is the recipient of the annual sweater project and I went and picked up the supplies last night and now I am ready to get cracking.  Given my lethargic nature lately however I may find myself asleep at the needle.

The tonsils are connected to the…

Filed under: Health Highlights — by gresmer @ 4:36 pm

On Thursday I woke up with swollen tonsils.  They were painful but manageable.  Over the weekend they stayed swollen but were less painful.  Today however I have another problem.  Today, my tonsils don’t seem as sore but my ears are killing me.  Every time I swallow my ears ache and the ache in my ears has given me a nasty headache.  I took some Advil but it did very little to stop the pain.  In addition to the headache (or maybe it is because of it) my eyesight is a little off today.  My focus is not great and things seem a little burry.

So much to be thankful for

Another successful Thanksgiving is behind us and I have the fridge full of leftovers to prove it.  Thanks to a full weekend of work-outs I don’t think I gained any weight but I will admit I certainly didn’t lose any either.  But that is a small price to pay in order to enjoy the cornucopia of treats available.  Especially the all important and oh so necessary, PUMPKIN PIE!!!!  MMMMMMMMM!!!!

The weather was gorgeous this weekend and I was able to get in a bike ride on Sunday down by the waterfront as well as a long walk around my neighbourhood on Monday.  I just couldn’t let the nice weather pass without getting out to enjoy it.  We may not see many more days of those temperatures this year – it would be a shame to waste them.

Now that is more like it!

Filed under: Health Highlights — by gresmer @ 5:02 pm

This morning I headed out for an hour long walk (just over 5K).  It was a little chilly but I felt good to be out.  Following my walk, I got ready for work and then decided to ride my bike to the office.

A walk and a bike ride on the same morning.  That’s not bad for one day now is it?  Now if only I was that energetic every morning.  But I think I will choose to bask in the joy of this morning instead of wallowing in the disappointment of the mornings I did nothing.

Stupid herpes!

Filed under: Health Highlights — by gresmer @ 5:09 pm

I tend to be very prone to cold sores.  I get them every time I run a fever.  I get them if I get too much sun on my lips.  I get them if there is a temperature change.  I get them when I travel.  I basically get them all the time.

Lately however I haven’t been getting as many.  Unfortunately that changed today.  On the left side of my bottom lip a few wee blisters have appeared.  I didn’t bring my regular ointment with me today so I had to take a trip to the local Shopper’s to pick something up.  They had quite a selection of potions actually.  I remember when it was impossible to find anything to treat a cold sore but now they have a number of options.  I picked up one that looked promising and applied it liberally.  It must be having some effect because the nasty little thing isn’t getting any bigger.  Phew!!

I can’t go back but I can try and explain

On Wednesday night last week I forgot to post an entry.  Since starting my blog I have felt quite bad about missing an entry and Wednesday was no exception.  But seeing as I was already in bed and almost asleep when I remembered, I figured I would just make up for the missing post on Thursday.

On Thursday I had a busy day at the office and in the evening I was unexpectedly not near my computer so I didn’t get a chance to make up for Wednesday’s post or to post anything for Thursday.  So that was two missed days.

On Friday, a plan to have a pint at Grace O’Malley’s turned into dinner and 4 pints.  There was live music to entertain us, good food and a great atmosphere.  It’s a pretty cool place.  It was an awesome evening but to be honest I was just too tipsy and tired to craft a post.  Oops, 3 missed posts.

On Saturday I got in some driving with a trip out to Oakville to do a little shopping.  It was a pretty relaxing day but I still seemed to be suffering from memory issues.  As I was falling asleep I again remembered that I had neglected my blog.  (I think I may have to seriously look into some memory exercises.)  Now I was missing 4 posts in a row.

When I woke up on Sunday I felt the need to get in a workout before starting the day.  Breakfast followed my arm and ab workout and then it was off to solve the issue of my missing bike seat.  Some of you might remember a post last year about a little incident involving the theft of my bike seat from the bike room at my building.  A couple of weeks ago, a trip to Canadian Tire resulted in a new seat and two bike posts (I wasn’t sure of the size I needed).  That was a huge step seeing as it has been over a year since my seat was stolen and I hadn’t replaced it yet.  Unfortunately however, neither post fit.  So I was still a gal without a bike.  On Sunday a trip to a local bike shop solved the issue though and I was soon cruising down the street on my bike with its new seat and repaired back tire.  (Turns out I had a broken spoke that needed to be fixed as well.)  After everything was sorted out, we headed out on a leisurely ride to enjoy the great weather.  An hour later we arrived at Ashbridge’s Bay.  After some lunch and a rest we headed back.  It was a great ride but I won’t lie to you – my quads were screaming by the time the trip was over and my ass still hurts.  All worth it though – it was a great day!!  I was so exhausted last night that I couldn’t possibly face crafting a post to make up for that previous 4 days.  And that would be 5 missing posts.

Monday turned out to be another busy day but tonight I was determined to pay some attention to my lonely blog.  I will try to continue my daily schedule of posts but I can’t guarantee that I won’t miss a day here and there.  I can say however that I will certainly try not to let myself lapse for almost a week.  Tsk tsk Gwenny – shame on you for neglecting your public.
