See? I used to be smart – really I was

Filed under: Random Ramblings, Techy Tales — by gresmer @ 10:06 pm

I was interested to know where I was sitting in the Google search results these days (well actually I had no ideas for a blog post and figured this would at least give me something to write about) and so I did a little search and I discovered two interesting things.

First – my site is number one!!

Second – I found a listing for me on a government site.  It was actually a listing of Governor General Academic Medal recipients.  Yup, that’s right – I used to be smart and I actually earned the Bronze when I was in high school. I kinda forgot about it until I saw the search result.  It is so weird to see your name come up in places you aren’t expecting.

Something just seemed to be missing

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 10:07 pm

Today I had one of those days where things just didn’t seem to fit together.  My brain was distracted, simple questions seemed to stump me, I had no patience and I had no interest in any of the things I was supposed to do.  I just couldn’t seem to get the pieces to fit together today.  And it hasn’t gotten much better so this post will be cut very short.

Suck it up people!

Filed under: Random Ramblings — by gresmer @ 9:32 pm

Can someone please explain to me how someone could possibly think that it is logical to go on strike because they don’t feel they have job security?  In fact I have an even better question – do any of you have job security?  Do any of you even expect that?

This morning I was listening to the news as I walked to the office and I heard that one possible reason for the TTC strike was because of lack of job security for bus drivers.  The other was because of shift changes.  Unbelievable!!

And because of the strike everyone was driving and adding pollution to a city that was already under a smog watch. I tend to be against strikes in general but when they occur for such ridiculous reasons and have such a negative impact I just get so irritated!

A…W…E…S…O…M…E – AWESOME!!!

Filed under: Random Ramblings — by gresmer @ 10:49 pm

I drove! I drove!  I really drove – on the street with other people and everything.  My driving instructor told me that I am really easy to teach and that I was born to drive standard.  According to him, I am a natural.  It was so AWESOME!!!  He gave me some simple instructions and explained some things and before I knew it I was driving along Yonge Street in traffic.  I also went on Finch, Sheppard and Bayview as well as a lot of side streets.  I can’t believe how relaxed I was in the car.  I thought I would be nervous but I wasn’t.  Once I got into it, I LOVED it!!!! He said I like speed (apparently a lot of his other students drive way under the speed limit but not me – I drove exactly the speed limit) and I have to tell you that I love the shifting – it really feels like I am driving.  I am sooooo impressed with myself.  I learned a lot of stuff today – more than I thought I would the first time out.  I can’t wait until my next lesson!

Let the season begin

Filed under: Random Ramblings — by gresmer @ 11:29 pm

Today I took my first trip of the season up to the roof to enjoy the peace, the sunshine and a book.  It was so gorgeous today and I quite enjoyed my time just relaxing and enjoying the weather.  I’m looking forward to doing more of that in the next few months.

Now I must sleep as tomorrow is my first in-car driving lesson and for the safety of anyone else on the road – it would be a good idea for me to be rested.

They do rent rooms by the hour

Filed under: Work Whatnots — by gresmer @ 10:26 pm

Today I spent the entire day in a meeting room at a Holiday Inn talking about enterprise architecture.  While some of the content was quite interesting, I have to tell you that sitting down for 8 hours listening to presentations makes for a very long day.  Man am I glad that this week is done.  For a short week it seemed pretty damn long!!

Your chicken will do what now??

Filed under: Random Ramblings — by gresmer @ 8:41 pm

The functionality of this chicken thang is not only useless but it is also very unreliable (most commands result in no action).  Regardless, it is just odd enough for me to tell y’all about it.

Now go order the Subservient Chicken around.

Due to technical difficulties I was not able to post this on Wednesday.

Today while my friend Eva and I were enjoying our afternoon coffee at our neighbourhood Timothy’s I saw Survivor Man.  He came in carrying some MEC bags and was in search of some coffee and a little afternoon snack.  I fully expected him to be carrying a camera and talking to himself.  I was so tempted to ask him what he bought at MEC.

Good but still not great

Intended for May 23, 2006

Due to technical difficulties I was not able to post this on Tuesday.

Today was my 6 week check-up at the eye doctor.  I have actually been slacking off on my eye exercises in the past 2 weeks (when you stare at a computer until 11PM every night the last thing you want to do it stare at is some more while wearing funny glasses) but I am still seeing a huge difference.  My optometrist tells me that he is also seeing great improvement but (yep, there was a but) my focus reflex is still way too slow.

So I have to continue with the exercises and go back in 6 weeks.  They also asked me to give them an endorsement for their exercise program.  I’ve never been asked for an endorsement before – I felt like a celebrity.  No pictures please.

Maybe “people” aren’t the problem, maybe I am

Filed under: Random Ramblings, Social Subjects — by gresmer @ 10:19 pm

I tend to be very guarded and hold back a lot of info when I meet new people but I have been trying to break that habit lately.  I have been deliberately putting myself in situations where I have to be more open and I have to say that it works.  I have been learning that when you open yourself up to people you have the most rewarding conversations.  I think I am finally learning how some people tend to be friends with everyone – they let them in.  Letting people enter the inner circle of Gwendom is something that does not come easily to me but by consciously going against my tendency to walk away I have been meeting some very interesting people and having some very rewarding conversations.  I haven’t broken the habit completely but I have taken some huge strides in the right direction.

And just so you don’t get all freaked out by my apparent change of heart regarding people – rest assured that I am still plagued by enough dumbasses to keep me busy for the rest of my life!
